Quick answer

GST registration kaise kare? You can do it online, for free, on the GST portal (gst.gov.in). You need your PAN, Aadhaar, mobile number, email, a photo, address proof and bank details. You fill the form in two parts, submit it, and get an application reference number (ARN). With successful Aadhaar authentication, the GST number (GSTIN) is usually issued in about 7 working days.

Once you have your GSTIN, you can start making GST bills. Get Udyog on Google Play or start on the web. There is a 14-day free trial.

Do you need GST registration?

You must register when your yearly turnover goes above the limit:

  • •Rs 40 lakh for sellers of goods (in most states).
  • •Rs 20 lakh for sellers of services.
  • •Lower limits apply in special category states.

Some businesses must register even below these limits, for example businesses that sell through certain e-commerce platforms, and some businesses that sell to other states. You can also register by choice (voluntary registration), for example to get input tax credit or to sell to bigger businesses. Ask your CA which rule applies to you. Before you register, you can still bill customers without GST. See the non-GST bill format for small businesses.

Documents you need

Business typeMain documents
Sole proprietorPAN, Aadhaar, photo, address proof of the business, bank account details
Partnership firmFirm PAN, partnership deed, PAN, Aadhaar and photo of the partners, address proof, bank account details

Address proof can be an electricity bill, a property tax receipt or a rent agreement. If the place is rented, keep the owner's consent letter.

5 steps to register for GST online

Step 1: Open the GST portal

Go to the GST portal and choose the new registration option.

Step 2: Fill Part A

Choose your state and district, and enter your business name, PAN, mobile number and email. Verify both with the OTPs. You then get a temporary reference number (TRN).

Step 3: Fill Part B

Log in with your TRN. Enter your business details, address, bank details, and the goods or services you sell with their HSN or SAC codes. Upload your documents. You can find HSN codes on our free HSN code finder.

Step 4: Do Aadhaar authentication

Choose Aadhaar authentication, and complete it within 15 days of submitting Part B. If you skip it or it fails, you may have to visit a GST Suvidha Kendra for verification, which takes longer.

Step 5: Submit and note your ARN

Sign the application with a digital signature, e-sign or EVC. You get an application reference number (ARN). Use it to track your application on the portal.

How long does it take, and what does it cost?

  • •Cost: registration on the GST portal is free.
  • •Time: after Aadhaar authentication, the GSTIN is usually issued within 7 working days. If authentication is not done, a site visit by the tax officer may be needed, and the application can take up to 30 days. If the officer asks a question, you get 7 working days to reply.

What is a GSTIN?

Your GSTIN is a 15-character number. The first two digits are your state code, the next ten are your PAN, and the last characters are an entity number and a check digit. You print it on every bill.

After you get your GSTIN

  1. 1Start making GST tax invoices with your GSTIN, HSN or SAC codes and the right tax rate. See Mobile se GST bill kaise banaye.
  2. 2Check how many HSN digits you need on bills: HSN code digits in a GST invoice.
  3. 3Check the GST rate for each product on the HSN code finder.
  4. 4File your GST returns on time. Ask your CA for the dates for your business.

Common mistakes

  • •Starting to charge GST before you get your GSTIN.
  • •Not completing Aadhaar authentication in time.
  • •Wrong address or wrong business activity in the form.
  • •Selling above the limit without registering.
  • •Forgetting to print the GSTIN on bills after registration.
